The inspiration for Midnight Sky is simply stated: it is an effort to create a color scheme that gives a sense of being outdoors, far from the glare of civilization, under a star-filled night sky . It is very dark -- almost black -- with pinpoints of blue light, and a celestial body or two orbiting the interface. It will be even more effective (certainly, it will be darker) if you use the enclosed desktop pattern. It will practically disappear into the gloom if you obtain a copy of Sven Berg Ryen's Kaleidocolorｪ, available at http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Pines/9346/kalcolor.html, and apply it to Midnight Sky (your Finder windows will be ~darkest~ blue with light blue text).

The Midnight Sky package includes the color scheme, a desktop pattern and, unless you choose to use the "Starlite" version, a complete set of custom icons. After installing Kaleidoscope in your Control Panels folder, simply drop Midnight Sky in the Kaleidoscope Color Schemes folder which goes in your Extensions folder. Then open the Kaleidoscope control panel and select Midnight Sky. To install the desktop pattern, open your Desktop Patterns control panel, drag the pattern to the open Desktop Patterns window and release it. Then select the new pattern. The custom icons will magically appear when you restart your Mac.
Unlike many of my color shemes, Midnight Sky was designed with only the 256 colors of the standard 8-bit palette. I have done my best to make it look well and function properly in black and white. Please write if you discover any problems; my PPC can't dispay b &w, so I have limited means to check my work. 16-colors seems to work OK, if you like black schemes, but. again, get in touch if you encounter problems. A special plea to users of Macs limited to 4 colors: please let me know if you're out there in seasrch of new color schemes. If there are more than one or two of you, I may have to adjust my fundamental philosophy of life -- and my approach to 4-color support.
Midnight Sky is opinionware; if you have strong feelings about it, send them along via E-mail. As a dedicated Mac-type, I am committed to the pursuit of quality in all things, so let me know what you think -- I can't improve if I don't know what I'm doing wrong!
